Introducing the Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound Biosphere Region
In 2021, UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) designated Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound, an area renowned for its rich Indigenous culture, biodiversity and distinct geography, as Canada’s 19th UNESCO Biosphere Region. This international honour recognizes the ecological and cultural importance of this living, working landscape. It is the result of many years of hard work by a dedicated team of people from many communities around Howe Sound.
Guest Speaker: Ruth Symons
Ruth is the Lead of the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society (https://www.howesoundbri.org). She will speak about what a UNESCO Biosphere Region is, what this designation means, why it is important, the steps required to acquire this designation, and what happens next.
Everyone welcome!
